Brother has changed tactics with the latest series of printers to hit the market adding both reset gears and reset chips to all its cartridges in it's new consumable range - so let us discuss whether its worth refilling the Brother TN-2410 & TN-2420 toner cartridge or simply replacing them with a comptaible cartridge.
The Brother Hl-L2730 family of monochrome laser printers and multifunction printers (MFPs) includes the HL-L2350, DCP-L2510, MFC-L2710 and HL-L2370. OEM-rated print speeds range from 30 pages per minute (ppm) to 36 ppm, and all have a duty cycle rating of up to 15,000 pages per month.
The supplies set is made up of a toner cartridge and separate drum unit. Replacement toner cartridges are available in yields of up to 1,200 (standard) pages TN-2410 and 3,000 (high yield) pages TN-2420, while drum units dr-2400 yield up to 12,000 pages. All printers ship with a 700 page starter cartridge and drum unit. The starter cartridge is missing the reset gear.
All toner cartridges require a chip for correct printer operation.

Ignore “Toner low” messages and the associated warning lights and reset the cartridges.
As usual the printer asks for the toner cartridge to be changed before all of the toner has been used. This is a waste of toner and your money. Put the printer into “Continue Mode” – this will force the printer to use up all of the remaining toner in cartridge ! (This method is detailed in the printer manual)
When do i do this ? If your printer has an LCD display on he front it will eventually say “Replace toner”. For models that have a toner light, it will now be on steady (i.e. it will not be flashing). For all the printers we tested the printer will now refuse to print. Brother wants you to replace the toner cartridge. However it is not yet actually empty. We now recommend that you reset the cartridge and carry on printing until you decide that faded printed pages are no longer suitable for use.
Resetting Brother HL SERIES
To force the machine to continue printing after the LEDs indicate "Replace Toner"
Open the printer's front cover
Turn your printer off
Press and hold down the GO button with your finger
Turn your printer back on (still pressing the go button down)
Within 3 seconds the of printer being switched on, now release the GO button
Press GO button 9 times in succession
Resetting Brother DCP / MFC versions:
You will need to use the control panel on your printer to navigate to the following settings
- General Setup
- Replace Toner
- Change this to Continue
- Press OK
Some models use different menus
On your printer press the “Menu” button
Press the arrows up and down ↑ ↓ (to move trhrough the options)
Scroll to the option “General Options or General set up”
Press “OK”.
Again using the arrows ↑ ↓
Scroll to the the option “Change Toner / Replace Toner”
Press “OK”
Select the option “Continue”
Press “OK”
Press Stop/Exit
You can now continue printing until the toner runs out and the printed pages are faded
To access the continue mode on some models you may need to press different buttons i.e Settings icon shown below is used in some of the DCP MFC Series
The MFC control panel shown below
DCP Panel shown below
Evenually after repeatedly “resetting”, the printer will not allow you to do this procedure any more and at this junction “Toner Ended” message will be displayed. Now as well as refilling with new toner you will need to empty the waste toner, refill the cartridge, change the chip and the reset gear. This will add extra expense as you will need to purchase the reset chip and the reset gear. The cheaper and easier option is now to replace the cartridge with a compatible toner cartridge.
Refilling the TN-2410 or TN-2420 cartridge
Assuming you have been able to follow the above reset instructions and use up all of the toner you can now refill the cartridge.
Warning! Do not refill the the cartridge until you have used up all of the toner. RESET the cartridge when you get the "Replace toner" message and keep printing until the print is faded. When the printed pages are faded then refill.
- Remove the 2 posidrive screws and remove the end plate to access the toner cap
- Note the position of the white reset cog wheel assembly, then remove the white cog
- Carefully remove the toner hopper cap (we need to replace this when we have refilled)
- Empty out any remaining toner
- Shake your bottle of toner
- Remove the cap and seal from the bottle and fit the pouring spout
- Carefully pour in the new toner (approx 80g for a refill)
- Replace the toner hopper cap
- Replace the reset cog wheel into the correct position
- Replace the end plate
- Replace the 2 posdrive screws
What about the chip?
We do not supply nor do we advise replacing the chip. The chip is very expensive to purchase and replacing it (currently) would make refilling the cartridge financially unviable. You can use the reset instructions to print without replacing the chip.
Our verdict:
Refilling is of course better for the environment but it may not save you any money if you replace the chip and is it a bit of a hassle compared to other Brother refills. So for this model we would probably recommend replacing your TN2410 AND TN2420 cartridges when empty a with a compatible TN2410 or TN2420. You should choose the TN2420 as the higher yield makes it better value for money. Before you replace them you should use the override instructions to use up all of the toner inside the cartridge.
